This oil painting renders a sweeping vista of the Seven Sisters, a moment drawn from a solitary hike that etched itself into memory. I was captivated by the natural amphitheatre formed by the undulating cliffs—an arched descent revealing a sunlit expanse of sea framed by dusk. From this vantage, the water shimmered with fleeting hues of ochre, celadon, and cobalt beneath a brooding, cloud-heavy sky. I sketched on site, absorbing the ephemeral interplay of light and shadow, later translating it in oil with particular attention to the delicate choreography of grasses, wildflowers, and shifting terrain. The minute variations in texture and hue evoke the quiet abundance of the South Downs. Distant figures, silhouetted at the dip’s nadir, suggest a pilgrimage toward illumination—both literal and poetic. This piece is an invitation to linger in that transient light where earth, sea, and sky commune at day’s end.
