Couture Embroidery
Simren’s immersion in couture embroidery began during her time in Kolkata, working with the master artisans of Sabyasachi & Co. in an environment where heritage craftsmanship and high fashion seamlessly intertwine. Here, she studied and designed intricate surface embellishments using time-honoured techniques such as zardozi (goldwork), bullion embroidery, couching, beading, cutwork, and resham (silk thread) embroidery, as well as appliqué, sequins, and hand-finished crystal detailing.
Working closely with these highly skilled craftspeople offered an unparalleled education in precision, patience, and artistic integrity. From the fine manipulation of metallic threads and mukaish (metallic foil work) to the layering of textures through pitta (flattened metallic work) and dabka (coiled wire) embroidery, every piece demanded a deep respect for the materials and the centuries-old techniques behind them.
This first-hand experience not only enriched Simren’s technical expertise but also instilled a profound appreciation for the cultural heritage and storytelling embedded in couture textiles—skills she continues to draw upon in her current artistic and design practice.
